MARCIA MAR
Avantgarde Multicultural Visionary Artist
Marcia’s painting method includes a complex set of rituals involving dance, taste, music and singing - a stimulation of the full range of sensory experience including the internal senses of balance, temperature and proprioception. Somehow, the different sensory levels are able to find their way into the painting through complex unconscious processes. The flow of this trance extends naturally into the flow of the paint. The painting becomes a register of the trance. What is created in her intimate solitude is a tactile dance of waking dreams in which the unpredictable combines forces with the containment of the ritual. Thus the work comes to relate to a wide diversity of sources ranging from her daily encounters with animals or birds to the other people, stories and events which come into both her dreams or meditations and daily life. This meditation and ritual as a way of working rewards us with a powerful syncretistic combination of irrational processes and clearly controlled forms, wet and dry imagery, hot/cold, light/dark. As a Brazilian living in London, working with refugees, she is perhaps in a particularly rich contact with so many cultures and backgrounds. Thus while her painting might or might not reflect specific traditions, an aura of cultural freedom dominates the work.
